The Doctor Who Reminded Us What Healthcare Should Feel Like

We weren’t planning on writing about a pediatrician visit. But some days give you no choice.

We spent the morning wondering the old part of St. George’s, Grenada. The spice market was loud and fragrant, stalls piled with nutmeg, cinnamon, and cocoa the way only Grenada does it. We walked through the mall, then the carnage area, taking in the mix of old buildings and everyday island life. It was a good day. An ordinary day, the kind we’ve come to love about this stretch of our trip.

Then Sophia and I stopped by Dr. Beverly Nelson’s practice, and it turned into the kind of day we won’t forget.

A Pediatrician Worth Researching First

I did my research before we ever booked that first appointment. Dr. Nelson is unbelievably accomplished. She was made CBE by the Queen, she’s an AAP board certified pediatrician, and she trained in the USA. The kind of resume that makes you double check you’re still in the right country. She’s been practicing in St. George’s for years, and it shows. Everything about her, from how she runs her practice to how she talks to a nervous kid, feels like someone who has spent a career getting this right. So I went in with high expectations.

But nothing prepared me for her kindness. She’s the kind of person you meet and immediately love. Not the polished, professional warmth you learn to expect from doctors. Something real.

This was our second visit with her. The first time, a week earlier, she gave Sophia a full hour for her physical exam. A full hour. Not rushed, not distracted, just fully present with our daughter the entire time. I knew right then she was different.

Today I just wanted a word with her, to see if she’d heard back from the specialist she’d reached out to for Sophia’s test results. She was closing up. We were the last ones there. Her answer stopped me in my tracks: “You won’t believe it, we were just talking about you.I was just about to call”

A Hug, a Song, and a Whole Lot of Patience

Sophia needed one more round of bloodwork, just to be sure everything is well. Nothing serious, just routine follow-up. And right there, Sophia started to cry.

Dr. Nelson didn’t rush it. No child likes needles, but this woman is incredibly compassionate. She wrapped Sophia in a hug and didn’t let go until the crying stopped. She promised to be gentle. She sang to her. I have genuinely never seen a doctor that present with my daughter, not even back home in the States.

Above and Beyond, Literally

We said our goodbyes, got the lab paperwork, and started the mile and a half walk to drop off the samples. We’d barely gone 200 feet when a car horn beeped behind us. It was Dr. Nelson, pulling over to give us a ride.

We are not her regular patients. We’re a family living on a sailboat, in Grenada for a season, gone the next. She had no reason to go this far for us. She did it anyway.

We made it to the lab with minutes to spare, samples in hand, completely in awe of this woman.

Thank you, Dr. Nelson, for every bit of it. The hour you gave Sophia. The hug. The song. The ride. We won’t forget any of it.

Our Recommendation for Cruising Families in Grenada

If you’re cruising through Grenada with kids aboard, Dr. Beverly Nelson is who you want in your corner. We’re grateful beyond words, and we won’t be the only sailing family who talks about her long after we’ve moved on.

Dr. Beverly Nelson, AAP

St. John’s Street, St. George’s, Grenada

Phone: +1 (473) 440-3916

Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30am–1:00pm (call ahead for Saturday hours)

Why This Matters for Cruising Families

Healthcare abroad is one of the quiet worries every cruising parent carries. You leave your pediatrician back home, your familiar system, your comfort zone, and you hope wherever you land has someone good. In Grenada, we found more than good. We found someone who treated a family of visitors like we belonged.

If you’re heading this way with kids aboard, save Dr. Nelson’s number. You may not need her. But if you do, you’ll be in the best hands.

What a touching story, Anna and Sophia! More and more, I'm convinced that the Cruising lifestyle is more in tune with how life should be lived. If only there was a way to spread this out to a broader swath of society.
